Woe Is Me

So I have been missing in action because I have spent my entire day, dealing with a power outage. It seems like when anybody sneezes around here the power goes out. Today we had a massive storm come through which wiped out our power for about 6 hours.

As a result of the outage, I had no phone and two toddlers that were hungry so we headed out the door. first I had to get the garage open which as you know has to be manually lifted because there is no garage door opener when the power goes out. I couldn’t cook because we have an electric stove and I didn’t want to open the fridge to keep our food from going bad. I think since we have lived in this house we have lost 4 or 5 freezers worth of food! Grrr.

The best part about the whole outage is that our sump pump, which you guessed it, runs on electricity was not working for 6 hours. When the power went back on, it dawned on me that the pump was going more than I am used too. I go to my basement and its got about 2 inches of water covering the entire place. So this is what we will be doing this weekend! We have carpets down there, we have boxes of things ruined and my husband has all the computer stuff. We have had to throw a lot of it away. I need to go to bed ugh! Calgon take me away!!!

You have my deepest sympathy.. We had a huge storm followed by a full day of rain a few weeks ago.. I went to the basement to do laundry and found over 6 inches of water down there.. I called the landlord right away and the maintenance man arrived with a pump to begin pumping it out 3 days later there was even more water, we couldn’t figure out why?? Here the storm drain was full for the town and it was pumping right into my basement.
11 days later, a tore up Yard from the backhoe my basement no longer had water in it.. I had to throw out some things, not too much and then the cleaning began.. I used 6 gallons of Bleach down there..
Luckily thru it all I was shocked that my Washer, Dryer and Freezer all still work.. Amazing.. They have been bleached and are now operational..
    Good luck to you!

I amazes me at how much we all depend on electicity. It is something we all take for granted. I know that I did before my basement flooded about 6 years ago. We lost everything that was in the basement, all the christmas ornaments that our daughter had made, the 400+ Little Golden Books she collected, the whole series of Dick and Jane books (the original ones) and lots more. We invested alot in rubbermaid tubs and built shelves to keep things about 1 1/2 feet off the ground. I cried my eyes out after we lost things that we could not replace like the box or ornaments our daughter made in school, that was the worst ever.

    Tammy,
That is awful! Losing all those ornaments. No more cardboard boxes for us! I am so glad we didn’t lose too much. My husbands computers were down there and luckily the water just fell short of getting those! I cant imagine if they had, we may have had a fire!

    Maureen,
Wow that is totally amazing that the fridge and stuff still works! we had a few things drip drying just to see if they will still work. I don’t ever want to deal with a flooded basement again!
