Walmart Makes Christmas and New Years Meals You Can Afford

With the holidays comes all the family gatherings and meal preparations to feed what seems like an army of people. I know how easy it is these days to go to the store for just a few simple things and you wind up spending nearly a hundred dollars and feel like you come home with next to nothing. With the current state of the economy, I think families are truthfully struggling to keep food on the table and finding ways to make a holiday meal and or party memorable on a budget can sometimes be tough.
Walmart is helping families celebrate without breaking the bank and they are offering fresh and affordable holiday meals to help eliminate some of the stress that comes from footing the bill in hosting a large gathering. Walmart’s Christmas Dinner for Eight under $30 provides all the ingredients necessary for a traditional meal, including a 10-lb Spiral Cut Half Ham, three cans of Del Monte green beans, one 10-lb bag of russet potatoes, Sara Lee dinner rolls, and a pumpkin pie! The New Year’s party basket for 10 for under $40 includes a Shrimp Tray, Vegetable Tray, Hillshire Farms Little Smokies, Pillsbury Crescent Rolls, Land O’Lakes Egg Nog, and a Red Velvet cake. And to give your recipes some pizazz Aaron Sanchez of Food Network is sharing some cooking tips and unique, delicious recipes he created with Walmart’s basket of holiday and New Year’s ingredients. I am amazed at how much you can get for under $40 to make a really great event! Not only that their holiday meal pages offer some great recipes and tips.
We do a lot of our pantry staple items at Walmart simply because they offer prices that are well below the supermarkets in our area. I think that offering meals that the whole family can enjoy without the additional stress of finding out how to pay for all of it is a great way to give families a leg up. One less worry makes our job as Moms a little easier so we can enjoy the holidays as well.
DoubleBugs, Walmart and Mom Central would love to give two lucky readers a $30 Walmart gift card to buy the perfect celebration meal for your family and friends.

Christmas Eve we always have ham, potato salad, baked beans & lots of Christmas cookies!
One of our favorite meals is a simple pot roast in the crockpot. I usually get a 2.5-3lb beef roast, put in 1-2 cups of broth, and add a layer of chopped carrots, onions and potatoes on the bottom. I put the roast on top and set to low for about 8 hours. Always very good, and fairly economical. It feeds at least six people, I would think, as we usually have a fair amount of leftovers.
I have done a lot of cost comparison in our area, and find that Walmart often has comparable or better prices to Aldi or Kroger, especially when they have sales on milk. I find a lot of good deals on dairy at Walmart.
My mom makes a great lasagna
Our family tradition is baking cookies for santa – and I love how Walmart’s meals are so healthy and put together – very convenient and affordable for our family!
We love turkey. Walmart is good, because it is cheap.
my mom always makes stuffed shells
It has been tradition in our family for at least 35 years to have beef fondue on Christmas Eve. Shopping at WalMart lets us afford to buy a better cut of meat for the dinner and have enough left over for dessert!

My favorite tradition is watching my daughter open her gifts on Christmas morning 🙂 I also love Wal Mart’s prices because they are better than any place else. You can make multiple dinner’s for under $40.00
I think Walmart is fabulous for recognizing that there are a lot of struggling families out there, and I applaud them for doing what they can to address the problem. My favorite food tradition is that I was always allowed to have Shirley Temples or Roy Rodgers for the holidays when I was a kid, and when my kids are a little older, they can have them too.
My favorite meal is turkey, mashed potatoes, coleslaw and pumpkin pie. I like Walmart’s meals for under $40 because you can serve a lot of people for a little money.

Our traditional Christmas Eve meal is roast beef and mashed potatoes, and then a big lasagna on Christmas Day. Walmart is pretty far out of the way for me for grocery shopping on a regular basis, but when I do get out there I notice how much lower their prices are on lots of the basics.

The shelves are always being restocked and I love the variety of chips and pickles and mustards and so many things to mention. Even the decorations are at great prices to make this holiday a real day to celebrate.

My kids don’t quite get the meaning of the word “tradition”. They consider our best holiday traditions to be:
1. My sister gets lost on the way to our house and goes by the airport (a 20
minute detour – so 40 minutes altogether)
2. My father comes in for Christmas dinner and bangs his head on the Christmas
wind chimes

My favorite holiday meal is Christmas Eve dinner. We’ve combined what we love best from hubby’s Finnish tradition and my Polish tradition and it works out to be a spectacular dinner rich in flavor and memories.
What I love about Walmart’s prices and holiday meals is that they’ve enabled folks to share a holiday feast with their family for a very low price. I know how much that helps in today’s economic climate!
My favorite family tradition is when everyone brings the same food to the Christmas party. We have been doing this for so long and it never gets tiring. And people seem to perfect their meals to make them better every other Xmas or so. And the desserts are always amazing. My favorite dessert is Watergate Salad!!! You can find the recipe on the back of the marshmellow package. We like to change it up a bit sometimes, but its always soooo delicious. I can easily make myself very sick from that one! I love Walmarts prices. I do most if not all of my grocery shopping there and save a lot of money with their Great Value products, which are exactly like the name brands. Meals for under $40 is great because you can serve some delicious foods without going over your budget. Who says you have to eat with expensive foods? Not me!!! Thanks for the amazing giveaway.

Our holiday meals are pretty set as to the basic menu–turkey (sometimes with ham as well), dressing, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes with gravy, a couple of vegetables, and a couple of types of pie. We actually picked up the remainder of the items we needed for tomorrow’s dinner yesterday at Walmart, and although I didn’t get out for $30, it really wasn’t the fault of those food items! Like you, the prices there are generally less than at the various supermarkets in the area, so most of our basic grocery shopping is done at Walmart. It is rather nice to know that if we stuck to their menu strictly, we could really feed the family for the amount they say–however, we usually have a few extras that put it up somewhat.
my favorite family meal is my mom’s mashed potatos and peas! she makes the best! organic and fresh!
I Love Green Bean Casserole…

We have the traditional dinner for Christmas (turkey, dressing, gravy, potatoes, etc). My grandmother always burns the rolls which makes us laugh. It’s almost a tradition in itself. I also love Walmarts convenience, variety, cheap meals that have saved our family in this economy!
We Love Glazed ham and Candied yams
My favorite family tradition is the whole family coming together for the holidays. We are all spread out throughout the country and the holidays is the only time that we all come together to spend time together.

Every New Year’s Eve we have a game night at my in-laws. It’s very casual and fun and of course we shop at Walmart to help make it affordable!
What I love about Walmarts meals for under $40 is that since it is just my husband and myself,it stretches our dollars even further

I like that Walmart makes it affordable for families to still cook a good traditonal holiday meal.
My favorite holiday tradition is getting to enjoy my mom’s homemade egg nog and sugar cookies by the tree on Christmas Eve as we exchange one gift apiece before going to bed — we eat so many cookies, we practically make a meal out of them! Walmart’s a huge help around the holidays, with both gifts and meal planning — I was able to put together a pretty great spread, with a pork roast and all the fixings, for about $35 this year, and I bought several great gifts from the home decor and electronics department at amazing “doorbuster” prices. Thanks!

We have a very traditional Christmas meal and a great part of that tradition is that we all bring something to help out the host/hostess, so they do not have to prepare everything. I love that we all help each other out by bringing a part of the meal. Thanks!
Our favorite tradition is opening a new game on Christmas eve and having a family game night. I love the low prices at Walmart, because my budget can go a little further, and I love the challenge of feeding my family a healthy meal for a reasonable price.

My favorite meal tradition is Saturday morning breakfast with my mom – we have such fun times.
We have to have a ham and turkey with homemade cornbread dressing for Christmas. Thanks!
My Pap-pa used to say that for every black-eyed pea you eat on New Year’s Day, you’ll earn a dollar in the New Year. If that was true in his day, then only imagine what each pea must be worth in 2010! We always ate black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day as part of a full meal, but now, I pretty much only eat black-eyed peas all day, starting with my first bowl right after midnight. In this economy, I need all the help I can get!
My fave meal- lasagna with a huge salad

Also I forgot to mention that I love how Wal-mart has made some suggestions of how to create a holiday feast for less than $40.
I hope they’ll develop something along these lines for hurricane season. A lot of people think they have to spend a ton of money, wait ’til the storm’s headed into shore, buy a bunch of expensive stuff they probably really don’t need OR they buy nothing and complain that the government needs to feed them. $30 or $40 at Wal-mart in May could buy you enough supplies to last for a week if something happens.
