Making Life Better

Summer is always a great time for us as a family, and we spend a lot of time outdoors taking walks in the evening or just playing with the boys.  No matter what though, I tend to spend time doing all the things around the house while my husband takes the boys outdoors during meal preparations and I almost never seem to be caught up with everything.  Family time is incredibly important and helps children with a sense of security and their confidence, and I place a high value on that, so I try and get as much time with my kids as I can.

jenniferbushmanOne of the things I seem to dread is figuring out what is for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.  Let’s face it, as a Mom, things can become overly routine and you start to get bored with the same meals every day and the same routines.  You have to start to get creative and to help you do that, there is a great resource for family meal planning.  Unilever has  teamed up with Jennifer Bushman, the author of the “Kitchen Coach” cookbook series,  to create the ultimate Family Fun Book.  This book is filled with great recipes and affordable meal ideas that help bring family together.

Bushman recommends making meal time “family time.” Some ways in which she recommends are allowing the kids to help with meal preparations, keeping a well stocked refrigerator/freezer and pantry with versatile ingredients. In addition she wants you to be creative and make meals fun by incorporating a theme.  One of my favorite ideas that she suggests is a carpet picnic right in your living room.  I know that we always are sitting at the kitchen table, so the change in scenery and the way we eat would be exciting and fun for the boys.

The Family Fun Book can be downloaded for free and it is an excellent resource for bringing families together and is loaded with creative ideas to make meal time special for you and your family.  MakingLifeBetter.com offers the Family Fun Book, but their site also has tons of valuable information as well, so gather up some meal tips with the Free Family Fun Book, and then have a look around, and I bet you can find some really useful information!

Skin Free Great For Sensitive Skin *Review and Giveaway*

Both me and my boys have very sensitive skin, so much so that I have had to change the laundry detergent that I use in order to prevent theri skin from breaking out.  In the winter months I am combating eczema, which almost never seems to go away on its own.  I always have a hard time finding skin care related products that I can actually use, because half of them are loaded with fragrances and a at on of other stuff that can wreak havoc on sensitive skin types.

I received several wonderful items from Skin Free to review and I was a little apprehensive to try them out at first.  I received the Extra Moisturizing Liquid Soap, The Sweet and Smooth Sugar Scrub, and the Niaouli Scrub for Blemish Prone Skin.

The Sweeet and Smooth Sugar Scrub is absolutely fabulous on dry skin.  I used it in the bath on my elbows, knees, and on my face and I couldn’t believe how good my skin felt afterward and not only that I didn’t have any weird reactions to it, so that is always a plus.  You can use it sparingly on your face to slough away all the dead skin cells to leave your face with a nice clean glow. It has nothing weird in it either and when they say its fragrance free they mean it!  You know how some thing tout that it’s fragrance free and it still has an odor to it, well this stuff doesn’t and I like that.

The Extra Moisturizing Liquid Soap, is fabulous if you have your hands in the water often like I do when cleaning and working with my kids.  My hands tend to dry out in the colder months and sometimes in the warmer weather, so washing with this soap totally eliminated the feeling of having to put lotion on after I washed my hands.  I love the fact that all the moisturizing I need is in my soap and I don’t feel like Im washing away essential oils in my skin when this is there to replenish it.  The package said that it is used for your face and rest of your body, but it can also be used as a good hand soap!

And for my blemish prone skin, I tried out the Niaouli Scrub and I love it!  Once a month it is inevitable that I get acne and here I was Naive to think that it would go away as an adult.  The Niaouli Scrub gently washed and cleans your face and helps to remove those excess oils that are culprit in causing acne.  Skin Free products felt so good on my sensitive skin and all of their prices are reasonable.  I know there are skin care products out there that claim to be free of irritants and hypoallergenic and my skin would beg to differ, but with Skin Free, I had no issues at all. This is some really great stuff if you or your family has skin issues or eczema prone skin.

Mimi The Sardine Lunch Bug *Review and Giveaway*

mimilogo

With the boys getting older and the weather being so nice we like to head outdoors frequently during the summer months.  On of our favorite outings is to head to the zoo for the morning and have sack lunch there before we head home for their naps.  When you visit places like the zoo the cost for food and beverages are usually outrageous and when you have a family of four, that can get a bit pricey.  For half of the cost we can pack a well rounded lunch for all us and it is so much more fun to sort of have a picnic as a family.

I am always in search of new and fun things that sort of make my life easier and appeal to the fun and whimsical that comes along with having children.  When I pack a lunch for the boys it is typically in a plastic baggie or in a brown paper bag.  If you know anything about food, presentation is always important especially when you have toddlers, and I try to make all things exciting to them.  They love the idea of picnics and bringing along their own special snacks for their trips to the zoo or to the playground.

mimithesardine1

Recently we were sent two Lunch Bug lunch bags from Mimi The Sardine and let me tell you they are incredibly adorable and when you see them, you will never go brown bagging again for your children.  We received the Hybrid Cars print and the Propellers because my two go nuts over planes and cars!  When I packed their lunch the first time in their new Lunch Bug bags they were really excited.  They have such bright and cheery colors and the boys thought that they were really getting something extra special.  Who wouldn’t get excited about a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that was surrounded by such a delightful packaging?

Lunchbugs  are also extremely easy to clean, which is a huge plus when you have little kids and you know there is always bound to be a mess near by. To clean them, you  just wipe, or machine-wash and tumble dry on low! Each bag is equipped with a sturdy zipper and soft handles, children and adults alike fall in love with the fun and colorful patterns, and everyone appreciates its eco-friendly and safe fabric.  I love love love these bags  because they are a vacation from the ordinary and are fun and you can tell that they are made with love.  This is a perfect alternative to brown bag lunches and is sure to brighten up any child’s day.

Playskool’s Clipo Hippo *Review*

playskool

I am always on the lookout for toys for  my twins and I usually tend to gravitate to toys that have some level of challenge for their little minds.  I am all for toys that are strictly for fun, but toys that encourage development of useful skills are a huge plus.
We just recently had the opportunity to try out Playskool’s Clipo Hippo.  These are so much fun and remind me a lot of the bristle blocks that I used to play with when I was kid.    The Clip Hippo allows kids to build all sorts of colorful creations with interlocking bristle type shapes (20 pieces in all).  There are even places to attach these brightly colored shapes to the Hippo’s back and on the wheels, and when they are done the pieces can be cleverly stored in the Hippo’s mouth.  I am a huge fan of the storage option since toys seem to migrate all over my house and having a place to store pieces within the toy itself makes for easy cleanup which is always a plus.

clipohippo1

Product Features

• Colorful hippo toy encourages little ones to build all sorts of creations while interlocking the peg-covered CLIPO blocks to each other – and to the hippo!
• Hippo’s mouth opens wide – blocks store inside!
• Rolling wheels for on-the-floor fun.
• Hippo comes with 20 CLIPO parts.
• Ages 18 months and up.

It is always fun to get a new toy  for the boys and they quickly wanted to jump in and play.  There was a little fighting at first but they both found their own ways to play with the Clipo Hippo.  The thing about this toy is that it allows your child to use their imagination so they can come up with new things each time they play with it.  The toy is recommended for ages 18  months and up, but I can see it lasting much into the older years.  I can remember playing with blocks and things like the Clipo Hippo at least until I was 5 or 6 maybe older.  Playskool has a whole entire Clipo line so it isn’t just limited to the Clipo Hippo, so you can add pieces and variety.

When the boys first played with it, they were all about where the blocks were hidden, and putting Clipos on the wheels  LOL !  Its such a versatile toy and the boys love it. You can see in the video, that there are endless possibilities for their little imaginations.   The Clipo Hipo retails for $20.99 and you can find it at most toy retailers.

Zeno Helps Zaps Pimples *review*

Acne and pimples can be a real pain and inconvenience when trying to look your best. I have always gotten those obligatory pimples that come with “that time of the month” but I guess I was all too naive to think that when I became an adult that they would magically disappear.  Well, I was wrong and even though I don’t care as much now when I get a pimple as I did when I was a teenager, they are still a real pain.

You can always feel a pimple coming on, like the day before your meet and greet with someone important, when you have to smile and look nice for the camera, or the night before your wedding.  Sometimes it’s like they have a mind of their own, and decide that it’s pay back and pop up on the end of your nose like rudolph.  You head into the bathroom, armed like Tim The Toolman, with your seven different creams, washes and scrubs in hopes of washing them away.  In my experience and only because I have sensitive skin, all those creams can sometimes do more harm than good.

zeno-mini_whitejpgI was given a Zeno Mini to try and it is a really cool little device designed to help when that dreaded pimple decides to pop up.  Basically it is a little handheld device that uses the science of heat to help your blemishes disappear or fade significantly within 24 hrs.  Clear Point technology as it is called, delivers a dose of natural soothing heat to the blemish that kills the bacteria that causes pimples to worsen. I was a little skeptical at first when I saw how little this things was.

So I decided to give it a try and never in my life had I been more excited to get a pimple LOL!   I ran to get my Zeno Mini, giddy with excitement, and turned it on.  My boys were dazzled by all the lights on it and the fun beeping that reminded me of a video game, but after it warmed up, I was ready to start zapping.  I wasn’t sure what to expect with my first use, but the heat that the Zeno Mini delivers felt great.  Zeno is most effective on blemishes that are just starting, below the surface of the skin. If you know anything about the start of a blemish,  you know that they tend to hurt especially if you get ones on your upper lip.  But after using the Zeno Mini once the pain that I experienced actually had lessened quite a bit.  After a second treatment and about fourteen hours later, I could barely tell I even had a pimple! I don’t know how well this works for other people. as each person is different, but for me I was very pleasantly surprised at how effective it was.    Not only that, I didn’t have to hang over the sink using creams and washes, and I could sit right in front of the tv while zapping my pimple.  I love that the size is small and can fit in your purse.  You can zap blemishes anytime, all you need is your Zeno Mini and 2.5 minutes!

I also wanted to mention that if you have sensitive skin, the Zeno tends to leave some redness where you treated the pimple but that faded for me within an hour, but everyone’s skin is a little different.  So I would try it before going to bed, that way if it leaves some redness you can sleep it off.

The price of the Zeno Mini ($89)  might seem a little daunting and the tips ($18.99) on it should be replaced after approximately 45 uses, but I think for the convenience, it may well be worth the investment.  I don’t think it is a miracle cure if you have acne and as with anything, it does have its limits, but seems to be very effective when you have the start of a pimple, at least in my opinion.  I will definitely keep this little beauty in my purse, so I will be armed with zit zapping power when the inconvenience of a blemish arrives.  The key is to get them early and the blemish might be a little less problematic.    All in all, I think it is a useful product if you tend to have the occasional pimple, and definitely a modern convenience.  I just like the fact that it is easy to use, I can use it anywhere, and if it’s going to work, it works quickly!  The Zeno also comes in a bigger version, but I prefer small and discreet. Definitely check out a Zeno and get zapping!

Picture Keeper Saves Your Important Memories *review and giveaway*

pklogo

This day and age everything seems to be reliant on computers.  I know that I am on mine close to 8 hours a day and it is where I do a majority of all my writing and storing of just about everything.  Since we are smack in the middle of the digital age when it comes to cameras and taking pictures, it is only natural that you are storing them on your computer. When it comes to backing up images on your computer I bet a lot of us fail miserably.

I take tons and tons of pictures of the boys and I will have to sheepishly admit, that I don’t have too many of them hanging on my walls. Let’s face it in the digital age of picture taking, we all get lazy and get all too comfortable with the idea that we have them stored somewhere on our hard drive.  The reality of it is, that, hard drives fail and ultimately put you at risk for losing all of your precious memories.  My husband has a server in which he keeps a lot of our important files and photos on, but even then, I like to keep a disk or something that holds my pictures in a safe location far away from the computer.  Anything can happen and knowing that I have some alternate location for storing my photos eases my mind.

Up until now, there really wasn’t an easy way to gather all of my pictures on my computer.   I store all of my photos in different locations on my hard drive.  I have photo files dedicated to reviews that I do here, my photography business stuff is stored in another file, and the pictures of my boys are in another.   So everything is sort of all over, and wouldn’t it be nice to just be able to  have a device that does all the work for you and gathers all the pictures on your computer, organizes them, and wahlah, you have them all together?

Well now there is a simple solution, and what I like to call my magical anti-stress device, called the Picture Keeper. I was recently given a Picture Keeper to try and I am very impressed!  The Picture Keeper is a little USB flash drive that creates a backup of your images simple by plugging it in your computer and clicking the “start backup” button.  Then it works its magic and finds all images with jpg extensions on the computer. If you wish to backup other images with a different extension there are advanced option to where it can save additional file types.   The folders and sub-folders are copied just as they are on you computer! And it gets even better. If you have multiple computers, which I do, you can just plug it in on the next computer and do the same thing.  There is no special setting, and Picture Keeper does the work.  When you want to go back in and update your files and do another backup, you don’t have to remember what files you have or haven’t gotten because the Picture Keeper will do that all for you as well. Do they make husbands like this? LOL
Being someone who takes a lot of pictures and in the photography business, I am always conscious of the fact that I have so many pictures and that computers do fail, and having some other form of a back up is critical. The Picture Keeper is nice because I can set up a few different backups and store a few of these flash drives in various locations. I would recommend getting several,  and keeping one in your home, giving one to a trusted family member to hang on to, and maybe keeping one in another location. This way you have multiple back ups in case something happens with your home then you have all your memories preserved.  Just to see how it worked, I plugged it into my laptop and let it go.  Later when I did a backup on my main computer with all my photos, it was just as simple.

ABOUT PICTURE KEEPER
Inventor Matthew Stanchie knew there had to be a better way to backup digital images. Despite working
for Hewlett-Packard, the thought of backing up his personal photos gave him a headache, and he could
only image what others without a background in computers went through. So, he created a user-friendly
program that automates the task (making sure to get the approval of an evaluator from his target
demographic—his wife.) Picture Keeper plugs into any PC, including Macs, and copies all images with
one click. With Picture Keeper, it’s a snap to save.
Picture Keeper is available in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB sizes online at www.picturekeeper.com.

I was amazed at how fast all my files were backed up and how easy it was to use. Anything that can make my life easier, is a huge plus. The Picture Keeper is so awesome that Dr. Toy awarded them with a Best Vacation Product for Summer 2009 Award. I definitely give The Picture keeper the mom seal of approval and I applaud it’s ease of use. It isn’t a complicated gadget and yet it is worth a million dollars if something ever happens to your photos. Picture Keeper retails for 8GB ($39.99) and 16GB ($59.99).  The price is worth it when you consider how much it would be if you lost all of your photos!

Would you like to win a Picture Keeper of your very own??? DoubleBugs is giving away an 8GB Picture Keeper to one lucky reader.

Vroom Solo *Review*

vroom2

When it comes to vacuuming, it seems like I have our vacuum attached to my hip all day long.  With two 3 year olds running around, a dog and a cat, I am always cleaning up hairballs, and messes.  I have to be pretty vigilant about keeping the pet hair up off the floor because one of my twins has allergies.  One of the major pains about vacuuming is you have to unwind the cord, get it plugged in and then you have to put it all away.  If you vacuum your high traffic areas frequently, like the kitchen and foyer, then you have to get out all your gear and move from plug to plug to reach everything.  I know my current vacuum has a very limited reach so I have to move plugs, I don’t mind doing it that way if I have to, but anything to make it easier is a plus.

I was given the opportunity to review the Vroom Solo vacuum and I must say that I love how easy this thing is to use and put away!  And even better when you “put it away” it is hidden from sight and you don’t have a clunky vacuum cleaner laying about.  Vroom Solo can be installed right under your kitchen sink and is perfect for high traffic areas in your home, and you don’t have to lug out your vacuum when you need to do a quick cleaning.  Vroom solo, also has a 24ft retractable hose which makes it easy to reach just about anywhere in my kitchen which is where a majority of the messes occur.

Installation was pretty easy. We did have to do a little work changing out our outlet to accommodate plugging in our dishwasher and the vacuum but that only took us about five minutes to do. I highly recommend having a professional install the vacuum you don’t feel comfortable messing with wiring and installation. Vroom offers installation from qualified dealers in your area.  The unit that holds the hose is mounted to the inside of the cabinet to keep it in place and typically the collection unit where all the stuff goes can be placed next to the unit that holds the hose, but under our sink we had to put it on the opposite side.  It works great either way, as you can see from the pictures and video.

vroomcollage

After installation, we were ready to give this thing a whirl and I gave it a workout!  I swept behind the dishwasher since I had that pulled out, behind the fridge, under the kitchen table, along all the baseboards, where the dog hair seems to collect, and my entire kitchen floor.  Everything was spotless and I didn’t have anything to put away afterwards.  I was impressed with the power from this little thing that is no bigger than a pc box or gaming device.  The vacuum does come with and extra hose attachment and a brush attachment  and I store those under my sink with the vacuum.  Now when any messes occur, I know that I can just pull out my Vroom and off I go. You can use this vacuum anywhere in the house and Vroom would be perfect for the laundry room, the basement, and bathrooms so you have quick cleaning access in all areas of your home.

The Vroom Solo retails for $299 which isn’t too shabby for a vacuum, and I know that I paid close to $500 for my Dyson and the Vroom solo has just as much power and a whole lot more convenience.  All in all, the Vroom Solo is convenient to use, works great, and can be kept where it doesn’t contribute to clutter in your home.  As a busy mom this is a huge plus! You can also register to win one on thier site.  Now get busy and “Vroom Your Room!”  Thank you Vroom for a great product!

lookgoodfeelbetter2

The big “C” word that no one wants to hear in their lifetime, is one of those things that I hold close to me.  Cancer is one of those diseases that carries a lot of heartache with it and no family should have to go through it.  I lost a family member to cancer and it all happened so fast.  There are many resources available to families to help people cope and to help lift their spirits.  I think that good resources like Look Good…Feel Better are so important in aiding families in the healing process and can even make a difference in recovery and survival.

Look Good Feel Better is a free, national public service program that helps women cope with the appearance-related changes of cancer treatment through workshops across the country, self-help materials, and other free information.  Look Good…Feel Better is a collaboration of the Personal Care Products Council Foundation, the American Cancer Society, Inc. and the National Cosmetology Association.  I cannot think of anything more wonderful since cancer can change a woman’s appearance so drastically with things like the loss of  hair and just how much the illness can wear on your body.  It is hard to feel pretty when you don’t feel good and are dealing with so many things.

In honor of its 20th anniversary, Look Good…Feel Better is asking women cancer survivors to submit their stories of how the program helped them cope with cancer as a way to inspire others who may currently be undergoing cancer treatment.  Entries will be featured on the Women of Hope is Beautiful blog to help educate others.  Anyone can visit the site to view entries, make comments and show their support.  In August, Look Good…Feel Better will choose five women with the most-compelling stories to receive a trip to New York City for a makeover and a trip to the DreamBall, a black-tie gala and the program’s largest annual fundraiser, held each year in New York City.

This is a great way to support a good cause and to give someone who has made it through cancer with courage, the chance of a lifetime to win a really awesome trip. Thank you Mom Central for making me aware of such a wonderful organization!

I have never been a rebel when it comes to clothing and accessories.  I am one of those plain jane people where everything sort of has to match.  I guess I always secretly dreamed of breaking out of the box but never had the kick in the butt to get me to walk on the wild side. Until now.

socksI hate matching up sock pairs when it comes to doing the laundry, because it is time consuming and there are so many of them.  Little MissMatched has the perfect solution and an ever so cute one at that.  I recently received a a pack of three socks (yes only three) all in fun pattern and colors, and none of them match on purpose.  At first, my old fashioned self questioned in my head, why I would want three unmatched socks, but the rebel in me just absolutely loves the idea.  I put on one coral colored sock and one green one and delighted in the fact that they didn’t match and I was loving it.   What a cute, fun and whimsical idea, and better yet, no rules.  I love just putting on my MissMatched socks and off I go!   Their socks are soft and incredibly comfortable too!

Socks aren’t the only thing you will find at Little MissMatched, they have a whole plethora of things to choose from.  Their jammies are exceptionally cute, and I love their MissMatched flip flops.  They also have furniture and all sorts of accessories, so you are sure to find something to suit the rebel in you.  The colors are bright and cheery and if you are having a particularly bad day, you can slip on some socks and jammies, and it is sure to brighten your day.  They have something for everyone!

Venettini The Creme De La Creme Of Little Shoes

May 23, 2009 by

venettini_logo

venettinilars1I must make a little confession about myself.  I never really paid much attention to anything related to fashion or clothing until I had my boys.  I am a bit of an old fashioned girl when it comes to dressing myself, and in fact it is rare that I go out and just buy myself things.  After having the boys , I suddenly gained this little obsession for buying kids’ shoes.

To me, there isn’t anything cuter than shoes for little feet and I get really excited when they outgrow their shoes because I know that I get to go out and shop for them again.  I have reviewed numerous styles of shoes over the past two years along with all the ones I purchased and my absolute favorite so far has to be Venettini shoes, and let me tell you why.

About Venettini Shoes

For almost 20 years, Venettini has been designing and manufacturing luxury children’s footwear with a large emphasis on fashion and style.

Founded in 1989, Venettini enjoys a strong cult following. The brand has grown organically and steadily under the management of Kinderland, Inc., a family business dedicated to designing, manufacturing, and distributing high-end and luxury children’s footwear.

Fashion, fit, and comfort drive Venettini’s designs, and we will continue to make feet look good and feel happy.

Usually when I buy shoes it isn’t just the cuteness/style factor that I look for, but I look at whether or not this is a quality shoe.  I hate big and clunky shoes for kids because, they just tripvenettini1 over them and they get in the way.  Before I buy shoes in the store I will bend them, check the soles, and imagine if they would be comfortable for me to wear.  If you think about it, a 2.5 yr old might not be able to verbalize whether or not a shoe is rubbing funny on their feet, or if it hurts in a certain spot, so as a parent it is my job to choose wisely.  When I was first introduced to Venettini shoes, I was amazed at how light and flexible these shoes were and how stylish they are.  Each shoe is crafted so beautifully and I love putting them on my boys feet.  They even love these shoes too, and they almost always choose them first over all their other pairs.  I went into a bit of mourning when their shoes from the Fall collection started to get too small because they fit the boys so incredibly well and we got a lot of wear out these shoes.

venettini

Venettini’s newest Spring/Summer collection is to die for.  Each shoe is aptly named with a character all of it’s own. My favorites are Lars and Math, each with perfect detailing that makes these shoes the ones that will get noticed.  I love the Lars because it has a unique look of leather and faded browns in a textile material, that looks like faded jeans and they are adorable!  Outside of the adorable factor of Venettini shoes, they exude comfort for little feet and the quality is a perfect ten in my book.  I have seen a lot of shoes for kids and for me these are the creme de la creme for little feet.

If you are looking for shoes that make a statement and for shoes that will last and are comfortable for your child, then I would definitely splurge, and invest in a pair or three of Venettini shoes.  I can guarantee that you won’t be disappointed! Venettini shoes can be found at amazon.com and endless.com
